Different Types of Mold and How to Deal with Them

Mold can come in all shapes and sizes and pop up when you least expect it. Learning to correctly identify different types of mold and how to deal with them is important for the health of your family and your property.

 Identifying Mold
You don’t need to memorize the different types, but you should know what signs to look for. Mold comes in a variety of colors, including black, white, green, and orange. The most common types of mold are Aspergillus, Cladosporium, and Stachybotrys (also known as black mold). Aspergillus is a common mold found in food and air conditioning systems. This type of mold can cause your allergies to go into overdrive if you aren’t keeping up with new AC filters.

Cladosporium is a “pepper-looking” mold that you’ll usually find on the back of your toilet, painted surfaces, and in fiberglass air ducts. This type of mold isn’t toxic; however, it can cause common allergy symptoms to flare up for some people. Orange or red mold will more commonly be found outdoors because it likes to feed on decaying wood or moss. This mold is harmless, can feel slimy, and can be removed for aesthetic purposes. If you find white mold, it isn’t actually mold but typically indicates the early stages of mold growth.

How to Fix It

If your mold problem isn’t severe, you can try a few home remedies to try and get rid of it. These include bleach, borax, vinegar, ammonia, hydrogen peroxide, detergent, baking soda, tea tree oil, and grapefruit seed oil, to name a few. Make sure you research what home remedy would be best for the type of mold you think you have and how much mold there is.
